about
"Enemy" is my first release following my debut EP, "Polaris" earlier this year. It is an upbeat, disco-infused pop song and a departure from the ambient electronic pop sound that ruled over my first EP. "Enemy" came to be fairly quickly, yet it was one of the hardest songs that I've had to write thus far. The song covers an internal struggle with a lack of self-discipline and laziness that has overtaken me in almost every aspect of my life; from my music career to my academics and even my relationships. The first step to fixing a problem is to find the root of it, but what do you do when YOU are the problem? I quickly realized that I am getting in the way of my own success and that something needs to be done before I miss out on great opportunities. So in a way, "Enemy" is a self intervention accompanied by disco stabs and a funky bassline. I am literally sitting myself down and being like, "You are going to get nowhere in life unless you actually put your best foot forward and follow through."
lyrics
Hey, I know you hear me. Look, I’ve got something to say
Times are tough right now, there’s so much on your plate
But now you’re turning into someone that I hate
Please, I know you crave a taste of sweet relief
A major breakthrough, great ideas stay up your sleeve
Gone to waste, you don’t pursue them, you just sleep
I know you better than anyone else
No running away from reality
The person who’s putting you through all of this hell
Is staring in the mirror back at me
My enemy, my enemy
You’re chained to me, I can’t escape
You’re with me every step I take
My enemy, my enemy
I have the keys, I could be free
Yet you still have this power over me
Hey, I would evict you if you weren’t up in my brain
Gotta get creative just to stop your reign
All this history we share can’t ease the pain
There’s no use crying bout the mess I made
So please, you’ve made it clear that you aren’t gonna leave
If you wanna stay, you’ve gotta work with me
Pick yourself up off the ground and earn your keep
I know you better than anyone else
Time to wake up from the fantasy
The person who’s putting me through all of this hell
Is staring in the mirror back at me
My enemy, my enemy
You’re chained to me, I can’t escape
You’re with me every step I take
My enemy, my enemy
I have the keys, I could be free
Yet you still have this power over me
Gotta try and push harder
If I wanna escape
(You’re chained to me, I can’t escape)
Gotta try and push harder
I can change my own fate
(Yet you still have this power over me)
Yet you still have this power over me
My enemy, my enemy
You’re chained to me, I can’t escape
You’re with me every step I take
My enemy, my enemy
I have the keys, I could be free
Yet you still have this power over me
My enemy, my enemy
You’re chained to me, I can’t escape
You’re with me every step I take
My enemy, my enemy
I have the keys, I could be free
Yet you still have this power over me
